Autumn 2024
The transition to fall is in full swing and we’re keeping busy with projects in various stages of design and construction as well as experimenting with new technology.
In November, DA is hosting a roundtable for the AIA’s Small Practice and Residential Committee (SPARC). John will be joined by Architects David Coleman, Joe Herrin, and Kip Katich for a discussion of how to maximize value in custom residential design.
Great Projects Anywhere – Idaho
Over the past few years, we have expanded our GPA map to Idaho, and two of those projects are currently under construction. Even prior to the pandemic, we were adept at working with clients at a distance and part of the formula for success is working with trusted local collaborators.
Big Wood River Cabin
Nestled on the bank of the Big Wood River in Ketchum, Idaho, we have designed a cabin that connects calming, quiet spaces to the surrounding forest. Complete with a tranquil central garden, wellness areas, and a focus on homegrown food, this home is a retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation. This project recently broke ground and foundation work is underway.
As part of the project, the existing log cabin home was salvaged and moved to live another life as a family home for a local tradesperson.

Pinwheel House
A mountain cabin on a level lot north of Sun Valley, Idaho, the four wings of the house frame views from a central gallery and entry space. This single-story home will showcase the owner’s art collection while providing welcoming spaces for family, friends, and four-legged friends. Construction will be completed next year.

Sneak Peaks
Keystone Cottage
Here’s a sneak peek of our latest completed project near Port Townsend, Washington: a stunning stone and wood cottage nestled in a tranquil wooded site, with breathtaking views overlooking the water. This design harmoniously blends natural materials with the serene beauty of the surroundings, creating a retreat for our client that feels modern and timeless.

Laurelhurst Family Home
Here John and Michael photograph the study model for a new home on Union Bay in the Laurelhurst neighborhood in Seattle. We are having a terrific time designing a family-friendly waterfront modern home for (and with!) this busy family of five.

Publications
The Garden Gallery House is featured on the cover of the current issue (vol. 61) of Portrait Seattle and Portland editions.
An article about the future of residential construction including The Bluff on Architectural Digest.
Lastly, our Union Bay Residence has a great write-up in the August/September issue of Fine Homebuilding and is in an article on multigenerational living in the Seattle Times.
Technology
We are always looking for ways to make good information about the design and construction process more accessible. We recently tried a new AI app that translated a couple of articles from our Getting Started Guide into a lively podcast. We’d love to know what you think! Is this useful and entertaining? Or too much banter and fluff?
What to Expect During Construction
