At Home in Tahoe

At DeForest Architects, our Tahoe studio is more than just an office—it’s home. Principal Architect Brett Smith has been part of the Lake Tahoe community for over 30 years, first as a ski patroller, raft guide, and builder before becoming a licensed Architect. With nearly two decades of experience designing homes in the Mountain West, Brett brings an insider’s understanding of what makes mountain living special.

Located in the heart of North Lake Tahoe, our studio serves clients across Tahoe City, Truckee, Incline Village, and beyond, reaching throughout California and the greater Mountain West. Whether you're looking for a lakeside retreat, a modern mountain getaway, or a legacy family home, our team understands the unique considerations of designing in this stunning yet rugged environment.

How is Residential Architecture in Tahoe Different?

Designing homes in Tahoe is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that embrace the outdoors, stand up to the elements, and reflect the lifestyle of their owners. Many of our clients are drawn to the region for its unparalleled access to nature, and they want homes that seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor living. Thoughtful layouts make it easy to grab skis or bikes and head out the door, while expansive windows and open spaces blur the lines between home and landscape.

The mountain climate presents unique design challenges, from heavy snowfall to wildfire risk. Our experience in the region allows us to design homes that not only look beautiful but are built to withstand extreme conditions. We incorporate fire-resistant materials, strategic rooflines for snow management, and durable finishes that enhance both form and function. Tahoe homeowners are also embracing a refined "mountain modern" aesthetic—clean, open spaces with natural materials that feel both contemporary and rooted in the landscape.

Stories from the Slopes: 3 Unique Projects

Stonegate – Located north of Sun Valley, Idaho, this home was designed for longtime residents seeking a space that embraced both their active outdoor lifestyle and the region's dramatic seasonal shifts. Featuring expansive outdoor entertaining areas, fire-conscious materials, and seamless access to trails, it embodies the essence of mountain living.

Shiki Hill Studio – Nestled in the Napa Valley, this phased retreat project began with a guest house, with plans for a main residence underway. Designed as a sanctuary for relaxation and creativity, the home integrates gardens, food cultivation, and dedicated areas for artistic pursuits.

Snow Crest – Just a mile from our Tahoe studio, this 1970s home underwent a major transformation. Our design introduced a new entry, expanded living spaces, and a garage for better winter access and gear storage. The entire exterior was upgraded to meet California's Wildland-Urban Interface fire code, ensuring both safety and longevity
