Roland Terry original design
Originally designed by northwest icon, Roland Terry, the ‘bones’ of the house were strong. The garage, bedroom, and living areas created a cozy garden courtyard, drawing in light and open to views of Lake Washington. Less successful were the bedrooms, bathrooms, and utility spaces crammed into one wing. Many of the finishes were worn and dated, and the kitchen was smaller and less connected to dining and outdoor spaces than desired.
Connection to the outdoors
A modest entry and window-lined corridor leads to a central courtyard with glimpses into the surrounding living spaces. The floor steps down to the living room and then opens to the full view of Lake Washington. Each of the main living spaces and bedrooms open to its own outdoor space making each room feel larger than its footprint.
Mid-Century house for entertaining
A wall of storage extends along one side of the house to support the Dining, Kitchen, and Family Room. As avid entertainers, the owners wanted to create a kitchen that would be the center of the home. A central island is the hub of the kitchen while the beverage station lends itself to hosting larger gatherings. DeForest Architects collaborated with Ore Studios and the owners to develop a unifying palette that extends throughout the house and complements the original architecture.
